Ireland 2027 Hotel Tour

Guided Bike Tour

The tour that was promised

September 30, 2025

Hi everyone,

So, its been a while since we first put up this section of future tours and it has been very quiet here since then. I’ve mostly been to busy with other things (like moving to Ireland!) but am planning to make this section more of a priority now.

I’ve talked about possibly creating this tour as far back as at least 2019 and with a lot of people responding very positively to it, I went and did research.

First it is good to know that my family in law is from Ireland. For that reason I have been going over to Ireland a lot and on one of our many trips there I found out that Waterford, the town the family is from, has a very nice rail trail. So in 2021 we did this rail trail with Lenny.

This trail is great, it is 46 km, fully paved and has lots of nice tunnels and viaducts. But this is of course not enough, we need more distance. I started researching and found out that there are not many options in Ireland for us. We want to stick to a certain level of bike paths that excludes steepness, too much gravel or traffic interaction. This turned out to be tougher to find in Ireland then I hoped. Especially when you look at the main Irish hotspots, like the west coast with the cliffs of Moher and the Dingle peninsula, it is very hilly and there are no bike paths acceptable to us.

From Dublin we found a bike path that goes inland for 130km all the way to Athlone. But this path hasn’t got much touristic value as it is mostly trough the flat inner parts of the Island.

After this initial round of research I found out that Waterford was actually planning a second stretch of rail trail to a town called New Ross together with a pedestrian/cycle bridge in the center of the city.  So on our last trip we went and looked at the work being done.

As you can see, a lot of effort is being put into this bike path but it is not quite finished yet. For me this bike path is a must for our tour, and we are simply going to have to wait for it to be done. The bike bridge is planned to be finished in 2026 and the path in 2027. Therefor 2027 might even be too soon.

Waterford, and the two rail trails that go in different directions, give us two very nice bike day’s, and close by there is an other section that leads to the famous Jameson distilleries. With that section added I have the first three days planned, but after that we will have to do a transfer over to a different area. Waterford and surroundings have a few interesting sights and some great bike paths but we must also ride our bikes along the more rugged cliffs of the west coast.

I’m really looking forward to doing this tour as there have been few tours I have researched as much as this one. I’m definitely doing this one myself and I hope I can keep you interested long enough here to join me!
