In 2027, it will be 83 years since the Allied Forces landed on the shores of Normandy on June 6th. D-Day was the successful start of the Liberation of Europe, at high costs. Many brave soldiers died. Europe still remembers and every year the countries of Europe have their own Freedom Day. Especially now, we felt like going to this region, which is, beside its history, nowadays a nice touristic area, with great cycling infrastructure. We will ride part of the Eurovelo 4 route, which follows the French Coast. Then we are in Caen, a port city and the capital of the Calvados department. The next day we go inland, on a great Voie Verte, and taste some of the local cider and calvados.
The second chapter of our trip we cycle in the direction of Mont St. Michel through the meadows and along the tidal waters. To arrive at a hotel. The next morning, we take our time to visit Mont St. Michel. We are in Brittany now! And then take another ride with our bus to Cancale, a village with the ocean on either side, at the Emerald Coast. Depending on the time schedule, we might cycle along the coast to Cancale. From Cancale, we cycle to St. Malo.
The final chapter of the trip is the cherry on the cake for sure. A comfortable ferry with reserved seats and some treats takes us to St. Helier on Jersey. We are entering the British Crown region here. Lesson to be learned: This Island is not part of the UK or Great Britain. Jersey is a self-governed, democratic island, a possession of the British Crown. Kind Charles is the Duke of Normandy and rules from that position! There are 3 Channel Islands, Jersey is the biggest. This Island was also occupied by the Germans, so there are also remains of that dark period here. However, this is now a very popular tourist destination, where many quiet country roads are now Green Lanes. We have designed some lovely routes here.
Our tour either ends on the Island, or you join us back to St. Malo for a last night at a hotel, and depart the next morning with us to Rennes, where you can access a TGV train.
All this takes place in 11 days, with 9 days of riding. On the 10th day, there are two alternative options: either you prolong your stay on the island (without bikes), or you book the overnight ferry to Portsmouth, England, with cabins on board. If you just follow our tour description, you will get on board of the ferry, return to the bus and have your last night at the hotel in St. Malo. And a drop off at the railway station of Rennes, to catch a TGV (Train Grand Vitesse, high speed train)
