Yesterday I had the pleasure of joining our guests once more. They are on the last tour on the Moselle the IRIS is sailing this year. It’s autumn and the grapes have been picked. My son Wouter is guiding on this Eurosail Tour and yesterday we went on the Rails to Trail tour starting at the old railway station in the city of Daun, going down!

That is: after you do 3 k. of slow climbing and you master some little hills in between. A gorgeous tour that I have biked probable around 15 times now. Bad luck with the weather yesterday. By far the worst day of this season: temperatures down to 8 degrees Celcius, and rain, rain, rain. Despite this forecast, (almost) everybody joined the ride. And loved it!

For the love of biking

Once again I admired the spirit of our guest: they just make the best of it. I envy the elderly guests who just keep on going. Sure hope I will be able to do this in 20 years! One of our guests, while biking next to me, explained what she liked about easy biking: a pace that gives you the most optimal possibility to get all the impressions: the views, the sounds, the smells. The rapid change of scenery.

A bike tour can take you through so many different landscapes on one day. She could not have described it any better! Or as Ernest Hemmingway wrote: “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.”
