Your adventure starts in Holland. What more should we say? Bikes. Canals. Tall, beautiful people who speak fluent English. Those hazy cafés. Cozy bars and superb Indonesian food. World-class art, museums and breweries. Great 2nd-hand shops and bookstores. And it’s prettier than a Dutch Master’s painting. Fields of tulips, flower-gardens, cows, cheese, countryside…..
Before you join our Bike&Barge Tour from Amsterdam upstream the Rhine to Koblenz we would love to show you our own country before we “set sail” and start biking through it onwards to Germany.
We have selected the best highlights of this Springtime in the Netherlands. Can you imagine 7 million of bulbs at one location? Too difficult…then come and have a look at the flowers in the Keukenhof, a garden started in the 15th century. While we are there we will also visit Delft, one of the Dutch cities with a beautiful old city-centre with “grachten” and the original hometown of the famous “Delfts Blue” pottery.
Less known but more intimate and certainly a place you will remember forever: the Hortus Bulborum, with its unique collection of bulb flowers, some of which date back to the 16th century and are preserved here. Lots to learn from the local guide who will tell you about the great job they do and all about the history of the tulips including the time known as the Tulipomania.
We will show you the Dutch coastline and have time for a lunch at the beach there. In the afternoon we might visit one of the old fishermen’s villages at the IJsselmeer. Volendam or Marken…we’ll see the (inner) sea!
And we will give you the option to select your personal highlights for Amsterdam. Just tell us! We can provide you with options and make your choice work. We will get you the tickets / reservations you need to NOT have to queue, or worse: not get inside of the highlight you want to visit.
We have the Saterday morning reserved for this. And then: we take you to the IRIS to start to sail and bike!Read more
Wednesday: Arrival at Haarlem
After you have checked in at our hotel, we will meet up for a welcoming drink at a local pub in Haarlem. Time to meet your tourleader and the other guests. To talk about the upcoming days of great sightseeing and get in the mood!
Thursday: visit of North Holland
After breakfast you will meet with your tourleader and we start driving to the Hortus Bulborum, “the only museum garden in the world where you can find over 4,000 different tulip, hyacinth, daffodil and other bulbous cultivars, species and varieties in bloom. Nowhere on this globe you will find such a fine selection of old bulbs in one place”. Says there website… Even though this is true, the most astonishing about it is the tranquility of the garden and the great knowledgeable volunteers guiding us around.
Next stop: the beach! Walk through the dunes, stroll along the coastline and enjoy a lunch at the sunny terrace or inside at the fireplace..weather depending!
In the afternoon we visit a local former fisherman’s village, and blend in with the tourists from all over the world to see the wooden shoes and historic costumes.
We will get you back to the hotel at the end of our tour.
Friday: a visit to South Holland
The Ultimate of Tulip gardens is our first goal today: the Keukenhof. Needs no further endorsement…in 8 weeks in 2016, it hosted 1.1 million visitors, rating the visit with a 8.9.
Loads to explore here, we will give you some directions and then it’s up to you to see! We meet up around lunchtime and drive on to Delft. Time to visit the Delft Blue Experience if you like, and/or stroll through the alleys, along the canals and across the big marketsquare.
We will meet up again to drive you back to your hotel.
We get to Amsterdam early, to be on time to get you to the highlights you have selected before. We will drop you off and pick you up again early in the afternoon to get you on board of the IRIS on time. By that time your luggage has been dropped of there already.
Things you might consider to visit here:
The Rijksmuseum, the Anne Frank Haus, a local market in the Jordaan, the Van Gogh Museum, the flower market along the canals, take a channel cruise or visit the Albert Cuyp market. It’s up to you.
Select or give us your own directions! We will make sure you get the right reservations!
Your Hotel in Haarlem
