IF ONE WEEK ON THE DANUBE IS NOT ENOUGH....

  • Easy biking
  • ~35 mi/day
  • max. 20
  • 106 mi

Would you like to enjoy your cycling tour a bit longer? Let’s get a head start, and cycle for three days in a row to cover the 172 kilometres/106 miles between Bad Vigaun (close to Salzburg) and Passau. Great cities of historical importance. In between, we will be in those typical Bavarian villages offering terraces, beer gardens, quaint hotels and the obligatory beautiful village central squares.

Let’s check-in at the local family-run hotels and enjoy the charm of Austria and German Bavaria! We cross the German Austrian border multiple times, for the countries are separated by the rivers, which we can cross at many points.

The cycling will be easy on some but certainly, moderate on other parts. So, if you do not like to walk up some parts, you better make sure you order an e-bike to support you.

Day-to-day

  1. Arrival at Bad Vigaun, 21 minutes train from Salzburg

We will start our trip in a lovely family-owned hotel right next to the train station in Bad Vigaun.

We would love to welcome you there at around 5 pm. The hotel offers a small but welcoming wellness area to relax at, and in case you instead spend some more time in Salzburg, you might arrive just right on time for the meeting.

Arriving a day earlier is also an option, if you like to visit Salzburg you can do so by train, it takes only 21 minutes, costs 2 to 4 euro.

After the bike fitting, we will have a welcome dinner at the hotel

  2. Bad Vigaun - Salzburg - Laufen 40 k / 25 ml

After our morning routines, we will start cycling, first to the village of Hallein. This village is one of the most important towns for finds of the prehistoric culture and presence of humans have been found dating back to the 2500 years BC. The early settlements were due to the salt that was to be found here. SALZ is the word for salt, so now you know why the local rive is called Salzach and Salzburg would be Saltcastle in English.

Let’s not throw salt in our coffee here, though. We will have an early break and continue along the Salzach to the first unmistakable highlight of our trip: the beautiful city of Salzburg. We will make sure we have a long break here so you can explore and visit the inner city and have lunch on your own.

Next and final goal of today is the village of Laufen. Another 20 k of easy cycling along the river, to end in at a gorge of the river, and an extraordinary hotel, in a former monastery, including the well-preserved monastery garden. The best find of hotels for sure, so we are more then delighted to offer this to you,  including dinner in the restaurant that is part of it with excellent local cuisine, based on locally available products. So very ecologically and sustainable approach. You will love it.

  3. Laufen - Tittmoning - Burghausen - Braunau 65 k / 40 ml

Today the ride is terrific, also quite a challenge at some spots where we go from the level of the river to the top of the surrounding hills. To reassure you: I (Lenny) have done this stretch on our regular bikes, no support, and two heavy bags (and I am neither a lightweight nor well trained). Yes, I walked, and at some point, got tired. So I will be on an e-bike, but I am sure most of our guests can certainly do without.

Highlights: next to the quiet bike paths and country roads, we will have a coffee break in Tittmoning at the beautiful town square. Then the first challenge into the hills and higher grounds to get from one river to the next. We decent to the town of Burghausen, famous for its yearly international jazz concerts, taking place in March. Ella, Count, Dizzy, they all have walked those cobblestones!

Burghausen was once a vibrant city for its salt shipping rights and is astonishing well kept. First city rights in 1235. Need we say more?

So, after a lunch break here, we would love to stay longer but have some more miles ahead. With again a few times going up and down. So by the time we are nearly at our final destination of the day, you will be happy to see the outskirts of Braunau. Besides being just a nice town at the Inn river, it is famous because the most destructive dictator of modern ages has been born and raised here. Yes, in Austria, not in Germany.

Our stop will be at a hotel I hadn’t stayed in because it was fully booked when I was there. So I can’t tell you much about it yet.

  4. Braunau am Inn - Schaerding - Passau 67 k / 42 ml

Do we go left or right? Both sides of the river offer options for a great ride. Can’t go wrong there, so let’s see what happens. We will stop at Schaerding for a late break and find other stops depending on the riverside we will choose! Schaerding again is a lovely town with a lot of terrace at the central square, we are close to Passau here, so might up with other Danube tourists.

    Let’s go, almost there!

At the end of our three days of cycling, we will arrive at Passau where the Inn river comes floating into the Danube, leaving a triangle-shaped old city centre at its confluence. We will check-in at our hotel and tomorrow we will start on our Danube tour!

  • Hotel Gasthof Langwies in Bad Vigaun

Right next to the train station Bad Vigaun, you can’t overlook this hotel. It is a beautiful hotel run by a family for more than 100 years, in the fourth generation now. It is a 4-star hotel with a gourmet kitchen. There is a garden, a mini spa area with a mini natural cooling-down pond.

This hotel is a hidden gem for sure, no adds needed, no booking sites involved, just a great offer in a restored and enlarged former monastery.
