In the evening, we’ll take you on a magical dinner cruise along the Vltava River. This isn’t just a meal—it’s a chance to see Prague from a unique perspective, gliding past illuminated historic buildings, charming bridges, and the iconic spires that give the city its fairytale charm. As you enjoy your dinner, meet and mingle with your fellow travellers, all while the city’s lights reflect on the river, creating an unforgettable impression of Prague.

Transfer to Bamberg, exploring Bamberg, sailing out after 5 pm

An early transfer will bring us to Bamberg! WOW, the entire old town is a UNESCO site. Our guide will lead the way in this magical town and you will also have some time to explore on your own. Once the seat of temporal and religious power in the 11th century, the city is home to both an emperor and a pope entombed here. The Imperial Cathedral showcases a wealth of art, including the Bamberg Horseman, a medieval stone monument that (700 years later) inspired WWII resistance fighters like Claus von Stauffenberg, Hitler’s would-be assassin. Stop and smell the roses at the prince-bishops’ palace. There’s a lovely outdoor café overlooking the baroque gardens, tiled rooftops and city church spires. The “island district” features the only town hall in the world straddling a river. For centuries, Bamberg cultivated and traded liquorice root, the sweet plant that flavours candy. But even more famous are the city’s suds. Try the “smoked beer” from Schlenkerla Brewery. You’ll never forget your first sip.

The IRIS will be waiting for you in the harbour. You will meet up with your guide(s) and the crew on the barge. We start sailing at 5 pm. While we sail on the River Main, we will serve your first dinner on board. Enjoy & settle in your home for the week!

Hassfurt - Schweinfurt - Volkach 52 k / 30 ml

This morning, we’ll take our time to get everyone comfortably settled on their (E-)bikes before setting off on today’s ride along the Main Cycle Path—a beautifully maintained route that follows the gentle curves of the Main River as it winds its way downstream.

Our destination is the charming wine town of Volkach, nestled in the heart of the Franconian wine region. Along the way, we’ll pass through Schweinfurt, a lively, modern town that contrasts beautifully with the surrounding vineyards and historic villages.

The ride offers a perfect mix of riverside tranquility, rolling vineyard views, and glimpses of daily life along one of Germany’s most scenic cycling routes. By afternoon, we’ll reach Volkach, where the IRIS will be waiting at the dock. Take time to stroll through the cobblestone streets, sample a local Silvaner, and soak in the relaxed Franconian atmosphere—a true highlight of the journey.

Volkach - Kitzingen - Eibelstadt 56 km/ 33 ml

Today’s ride begins in Volkach, nestled deep in the heart of Franconian wine country. Before we roll out, it’s worth pausing to look up—high above the vineyards sits Maria im Weingarten, a graceful pilgrimage church that has watched over the valley for centuries. Inside, you’ll find exquisite woodcarvings by the master sculptor Tilman Riemenschneider, while outside, panoramic views reveal the Main River’s famous oxbow, a perfect curve where the fertile slopes produce some of Bavaria’s finest wines.

From here, we follow the river downstream to Kitzingen, another jewel of the Franconian wine trail. Its crooked watchtower leans at a curious angle, and local lore insists it was built with a mortar-and-wine mix—proof, perhaps, of the region’s devotion to its vineyards! Even more outlandish is the town’s legend that Count Dracula himself lies buried in the nearby cemetery. Whether truth or tall tale, Kitzingen’s charm is undeniable: half-timbered houses, welcoming wine taverns, and a cheerful spirit that seems to bubble up from the cellars themselves.

After a leisurely stroll through Kitzingen’s historic streets, we continue cycling through Ochsenfurt and Marktbreit, two riverside towns rich in medieval character and framed by gently rolling vineyards. By evening, we reach Eibelstadt, a quiet, peaceful haven where the IRIS awaits. Relax on deck with a glass of local Silvaner as the sun sets over the Main—the perfect end to a day steeped in history, legend, and the flavor of Franconia’s finest wines.

Eibelstadt -Würzburg 10 km/ 6 ml

Our destination today is Würzburg, only 10 k to bike there. Anytime you see the word “Burg” after a city name, it’s going to be good. Burg = fortress. The imposing landmark of this city is the fortress (Marienburg) on the hill. Home of the once-powerful prince-bishops with monumental views over their ecclesiastic fiefdom. Vineyards slope down to the city ever since the Middle Ages providing wealth and good libation for this ancient arch-diocese. Famous writer Goethe preferred white wines from Würzburg. When the old fortress was deemed out-modish, these religious overlords built themselves an entirely new Residenz in the 1700s. All the big names around Europe were called in to collaborate. Go broke or go Baroque! We will have a guided tour here!Imagine puffy powdered wigs, corsets and cleavage, birdcage hats, pastel tones and gilded excess. This palace is considered one of the finest examples in Germany and UNESCO-approved. Connected by a bridge of saintly personalities, Würzburg spans both sides of the river where a festive mood lingers into the night. It might have to do with being surrounded by grape vines and a university.

Karlstadt-Marktheidenfeld

After a leisurely morning sail, we mount our trusty bikes in Karlstadt and set off along the Main River, tracing its graceful S-curves as it winds through storybook scenery. One charming medieval village gives way to the next, each framed by vineyards, forests, and half-timbered houses.

Our route skirts the edge of the legendary Spessart Woods—known as “the woodpecker hills” and once Charlemagne’s imperial hunting grounds. For centuries, these dense beech and oak forests were the haunt of bandits and poachers who preyed on merchants traveling the old salt and glass trade routes. Think of it as Germany’s own Sherwood Forest, a place still brimming with mystery and magic.

We roll into Lohr am Main, a picturesque town with a colorful and sometimes dark past—plagues, witch trials, and even ties to the real-life tale of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. From its castle to the surrounding cliffs, this is a place where legend feels alive.

By evening, we arrive in Marktheidenfeld, a lovely riverside town where we dock for the night. Relax, wander the cobbled streets, and reward yourself with a well-deserved scoop (or two) of local ice cream. After all, you’ve just pedaled through a landscape straight out of a fairy tale.

Marktheidenfeld-Wertheim-Miltenberg

We pedal along, savoring every moment of the ride. Comfortable in our saddles and confident on the trail, Miltenberg gradually comes into view—and it’s picture-perfect. Crooked cobblestone alleys, medieval watchtowers, and timber-framed houses give the town the feeling of a living Advent calendar, especially when the evening lights twinkle. Across the river, a 14th-century abbey rises gracefully, draped in vineyards that have thrived for centuries.

Miltenberg is also famous for Faust Beer and home to one of Germany’s oldest continuously operating guesthouses, Zum Riesen, welcoming travelers since 1411. Legendary visitors include Napoléon and Elvis Presley—who likely enjoyed the same hearty fare you’ll find today: sausages, dumplings, potato salad, and of course, beer fresh from the brewery next door.

Raise your stein and let it thump on the table. This is the heart of Germany. This is why you travel. Medieval charm, centuries of history, and a taste of local culture—all in one unforgettable stop.

Miltenberg - Aschaffenburg

Our first stop today will be at Kloster Engelberg, either looking at it or walking up to have a coffee at the “klosterschaenke” the monastery’s restaurant. Started in the middle ages to comfort the pilgrims that visited the Fransiscaner Monastery it still is.

We will pass by the Beggers Tower and the Chapel of St. Anna, before we have a stroll through the Park Schoenbusch, the oldest classical English style garden in Germany.

And there it is, the imposing silhouette of the Johannisburg. Must be Aschaffenburg, can’t go wrong there. The massive four-winged co dmples, build from 1605 untill 1614 is one of the most important Renaissance buildings. After serious damage during WWII, the palace was restored, including rescued parts of its furnishings. Next to it the Pompejanum, an idealized replica of a Roman Villa, build in the 19th century. And yes, Aschaffenburg has lovely terraces as well to have a well deserved cold drink. Cheers!

Aschaffenburg - Frankfurt, partially cycling

Today, you will have some free time in the morning while the IRIS staff prepares for the arrival of other guests joining you for the last 9 days on our way to Amsterdam.

Or, you can ride with the guides to Frankfurt, along the cyclepaths.

Options today will depend on the number of guests that we will have on this part of the tour. Let it be a surprise once we are there!

What we do for sure is start sailing at around 1 pm, and drop you off for a ride of about 30 km/ 18 miles to Frankfurt, where the ship will be docked for the night!

Frankfurt to Ruedesheim, cycling from Mainz 35 km / 20 ml.

We start today’s ride after a sail to Mainz, the vibrant capital of Rhineland-Palatinate and a city steeped in history. Known for its Roman roots, Mainz boasts a beautiful old town, colourful half-timbered houses, and the impressive Mainz Cathedral. We head out along the Rhine River, it takes us past rolling vineyards and charming riverside villages, eventually reaching Rüdesheim, a gem of the Rhine Valley. This is a place where the Romans first planted vines over 2,000 years ago, and the wine culture is still alive and thriving. Wander through the famous Drosselgasse, a lively alley just 144 meters long with 37,508 paving stones, filled with live music, cosy taverns, and the aroma of local wines. Don’t miss the Asbach Visitor Centre, home to Germany’s beloved brandy, crafted locally since 1892. Even if Brandy isn’t your thing, their artisanal chocolates are a sweet delight.

Rüdesheim’s old town, dating back to the Middle Ages, still retains parts of its fortifications, including the Adlerturm (Eagle Tower), giving a glimpse into its storied past. Stroll the streets or enjoy a drink in one of the traditional wine taverns housed in historic half-timbered buildings. The IRIS will dock for the night in Ruedesheim.

The ride itself is manageable, but adventurous cyclists can add extra miles or tackle some gentle hills along the way. For those feeling ambitious, you could even start in Frankfurt, requiring an early 7 am departure.

Ruedesheim Sail through the Loreley to St. Goar, cycling to Koblenz 40 km/23 miles or 70 km/44 miles

This morning, we leave the IRIS in St. Goar, setting off on a bike ride through one of the most breathtaking stretches of the Rhine Valley. The river winds between steep, vineyard-clad cliffs, crowned with castles that seem to spring from the pages of a storybook. Just beyond St. Goar lies the legendary Loreley Rock, a sheer slate cliff rising 132 meters above the river. According to legend, a beautiful siren once sat here, her golden hair shimmering in the sun as she sang—luring sailors to their doom on the rocks below. Even today, the spot has an almost mythical aura, with panoramic views that capture the magic of the Rhine.

We continue to the ancient city of Boppard, where the Rhine makes a dramatic 180-degree bend. With its precipitous vineyards, charming river promenade, and the oldest preserved Roman fort walls north of the Alps, Boppard has been a magnet for travelers for centuries. It’s the perfect place to pause for a coffee, soak in the views, and watch the boats glide by.

Our day ends in Koblenz, at the meeting point of the Rhine and Moselle Rivers. Here, the grand statue of Emperor William I stands proudly at the Deutsches Eck, overlooking the confluence of the two mighty waterways. Take time to stroll through the historic old town, enjoy a local beer or wine, and reflect on the day’s journey through Germany’s romantic heartland.

For those craving a longer ride, there’s an option to begin earlier in Rüdesheim, following the river’s path for approximately 70 km (44 miles)—a full day immersed in the beauty, history, and legend of the Rhine.

Another option is to start with a visit to the viewing point on top of the Loreley Rock, after the sail, and before we start riding.

Koblenz - Bonn - Cologne: cycling from Bonn to Cologne 43 km / 26 ml

Cologne to Wuppertal sailing, Cycling from Cologne or Leverkussen to Duesseldorf

For the adventurous, you can cycle all the way to Düsseldorf along the well-signposted Rhine River Path, following the river’s graceful bends and curves. Along the way, we’ll pause at the Botanical Gardens for a refreshing break amid beautifully landscaped grounds and colourful flora.

Arriving in Düsseldorf, Germany’s fashion and advertising capital, the city sparkles with modern architecture, vibrant cultural districts, and international flair. Take time to explore the Altstadt along the river or the striking Media Harbor, a redeveloped warehouse district with stunning contemporary design.

No visit here is complete without sampling Altbier, the local top-fermented beer—hoppy, crisp, and continuously poured with precision. As evening falls, the city takes on a relaxed charm, and you can enjoy a hearty roast pork shank (Haxen) at the historic Füchschen Brewery, where centuries of tradition meet modern conviviality.

Morning sail to Rees, cycling to Arnhem (NL)

We begin our day in Rees, a picturesque riverside town renowned for its medieval walls, towers, and scenic promenade lined with art sculptures, cafés, and restaurants.

From Rees, we pedal along the Rhine river toward Emmerich, where we pause for a relaxing break. Here, you can enjoy coffee and cake while taking in the sight of hundreds of ships passing beneath Germany’s longest suspension bridge, an impressive 1,600-foot span across the Rhine. The combination of river traffic, engineering marvels, and riverside scenery makes this a perfect spot to rest and capture some photos before continuing.

After Emmerich, we cross the border into the Netherlands and make our way to Doornenburg Castle, a striking 13th-century brick fortress. Once used as German headquarters during WWII, the castle retains its imposing structure and atmosphere.

Continuing north, we arrive in Arnhem, a city forever linked to Operation Market Garden in September 1944. The daring Allied attempt to capture the city’s bridges—the “Bridge Too Far”—was ultimately unsuccessful, and it would take another eight months to liberate the northern Netherlands. Today, Arnhem honours its history with memorials and historic sites that tell the story of bravery, strategy, and sacrifice.

Arnhem - Wageningen - Kroeller Mueller Museum-Wageningen

We set off from the IRIS, and our first stop of the day is the Airborne Museum and Memorial, just 10 km from where we dock. To get there, we’ll enjoy a short ferry crossing over the Rhine, adding a scenic touch to the start of our ride.

After exploring the museum and reflecting on the bravery of the airborne troops, we continue to the entrance of National Park Hoge Veluwe. This stunning park is not only a natural gem but also home to the Kröller-Müller Museum, which houses the second largest collection of Van Gogh paintings along with works by other impressionist masters. Don’t miss the expansive sculpture garden, a perfect spot to pause, admire art in a natural setting, and enjoy a packed lunch amid serene surroundings. The ride from the museum entrance covers about 18 km.

Leaving the park at Otterlo, we cycle through the lush landscapes of the Veluwe, a mosaic of forests, heathlands, and dunes, all the way to Wageningen, where the IRIS awaits. This final leg of around 30 km is a delightful ride, offering a perfect mix of nature, culture, and gentle exercise—a truly rewarding day on the bike.

We have a sailing dinner on the NederRijn, a quiet part of the Rhine, where the river has “lost” its main stream to the Waal River, flowing down to the North Sea. We dock at Wijk bij Duurstede, a beautiful town with city walls, a windmill, lovely historic alleys, and the ruins of a Castle. Be sure you join the guides for the town walk tonight.

Breukelen - Muiderslot - Amsterdam

After a relaxing morning sail, we start our ride in Breukelen—yes, the town that gave its name to Brooklyn! We follow the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal for a short stretch before turning toward the striking Muiderslot Castle. A visit with an audio guide lets you explore this well-preserved medieval fortress and imagine life in the Dutch Golden Age. After a leisurely lunch nearby, we continue on the final leg of our cycling adventure.

Along the way, we pause at an iconic cycle bridge, then enter Amsterdam from the north, using a ferry to cross the IJ and continuing along quiet streets and bike paths to the IRIS. The route is smooth and easy, free from heavy traffic or crowds, letting you enjoy a last peaceful ride through the Dutch countryside and city outskirts.

Back on board, the IRIS is docked at its own spot in the Oosterdok, ready for the farewell dinner. Take a moment to enjoy the view from the front sundeck, or step off the ship to stroll through Amsterdam’s canals, historic streets, and vibrant neighbourhoods. From charming bridges to world-famous museums, the city pulses with culture and energy. You’ve made it—celebrate your journey in one of Europe’s most enchanting cities!

Auf Wiedersehen, Farewell, Tot Ziens

Today, it is time to move on. After breakfast, served at 8:00 am, and the goodbyes, you will leave before 9:00 am.

It is a 20-minute walk to the central station, but you can also let us order a cab for you.

From the Central Station, you can reach the Airport with a direct train, which stops right below the central departure/arrival hall. Guides can help you get the right train ticket; no need to do this ahead of time.
