Although we are a big fan of the Danube tour we scheduled for 2020 and 2021, visiting the absolute highlights of the Danube, we also want to offer a tour that is more OFF the beaten track, offering more rural roads and the countryside of Hungary. So the ship travels beyond Budapest, to the border with Serbia. The ship sails during the night and lets us off to explore and cycle to the next destination. The scenery changes every day and the cycling is part following the Danube, part going through the countryside. MIND YOU: the visit of the well know highlights is limited to Budapest mainly. If you are looking for a tour including visits to Vienna and Bratislava, you definitely should book our “regular” Danube trip.
The ship we are on for our tour is an elegant and luxurious vessel. It’s a catamaran, all cabins have river view and a balcony. Or visit the front of the ship with a panoramic view. Jacuzzi and great dining await you! As we will be with our small group, we will be together for breakfast and dinner. During the day we will go with our own guide(s) and cycle. The ship itself can host 160 guests, but we will be with our group of max 30 guests.
Arriving at the Primadonna in Passau
Our Danube Tour starts with arriving at the ship, docked in Passau. We are welcome between 3.00 and 5.30 pm.
A welcoming snack, unpack and enjoy the first lovely sail through Austria, and the famous Schloegener Schlinge.
Our diner is served and after we have explained about tomorrows ride you can enjoy your first night of sleep on board.
Ybbs to Krems (Austria) 59 k / 36 mi
Early in the morning, we will arrive in Ybbs, and the cycling will start right after breakfast! There is a lovely stretch waiting for us, cycling through vineyard villages with ancient monasteries and remains of castles. The highlight could be the visit to Melk and its impressive Monastery. High on the hill, it looks over the Danube. It is a walk-up there, worth the effort.
Esztergom to Budapest (Hungary) 75 k / 46 mi
Most likely we will be still sailing in the morning and can start cycling at around 12 am. We are now in Hungary! We have a long stretch ahead, which can be shortened by taking the train in case we would run out of time. The plan is to cycle 75 k, right to the ship that will dock in Budapest at 6 pm (according to the plan).
The ride will start with a visit to the Dome of Esztergom, and after that, we follow the river and pass along Visegrad and Vac.
And, if you have some energy left after this long day: the ship will be docked here for the night, so we can go into a first stroll through the city! No night curfew.
Budapest, 22 k / 13 mi
We start the morning with a bus tour to and through Budapest. And in the afternoon we can enjoy the 100% car-free bicycle road through the inner city and further on to the Margareteninsel, a lovely recreational area in the middle of Budapest, we will cycle about 8 km on this car-free island. And back to the ship, with a stop at the foot of the Castle Hill. Back on the ship at 7.30 pm at the latest, and a nice sail out of this impressive town of Buda and Pest, divided by the Danube.
Mohacs to Baja throug the Puszta 44 k/18 mi and Kalocsa 9 k / 5 mi
We are getting close to the Serbian Border today! We will cross the Danube with a ferry and cycle along the Danube Path passing by the herds of cattle, pigs and horses, into the baroque town of Baja. Here we join the Primadonna again.
In the afternoon we can cycle a bit more, into the most important town of the Puszta, Kalosca to the Dome, for a guided tour. Kalocsa produces a lot of the typical Hungarian souvenirs like pottery and such, so maybe we can shop a bit as well.
Komarno (Slovakia) 9 or 52 k / 6 or 33 mi
Our ship is still sailing in the morning, we are planned to arrive at around 1 pm at Komarno, a lovely fortified village.
Either we spend our time with a visit to the town, a short bike ride to the Monostori Fortress for a guided tour, or a long bike ride to the village of Moca and back.
We will arrive onboard on time to enjoy the sailing dinner.
Vienna to Tulln
Although we have arrived in Vienna, our schedule does not permit for a visit of the town. We are expected to cycle a last stretch to Tulln and join the ship rather early, at 1 pm at the latest.
So if you definitely want to visit Vienna, you could decide to end your tour with us here. You would miss out on the last short ride and the last night on board though.
Another option could be that you return to Vienna by train the next day, from Passau.
We are, to be honest, a bit in doubt about this last day, for we can imagine it is weird to skip Vienna. So, if it turns out our guests prefer to leave the barge at this point, we will join the guest and arrange for walking tours in Vienna.
After a last sail through the night, we will arrive in Passau in the morning (around 10.30 am), and it’s time to say goodbye to the ship.
